Love, American Style

Love, American Style

Listen, I want you to imagine a TV show that looked at the concept of love and said, you know what, why settle for one story when we can cram a whole buffet of them into a single hour? That is Love, American Style, baby. This show is the dim sum of romance programming. You do not get one big entree. You get a rotating carousel of little plates, each one with a different flavor, a different celebrity, and a different take on what happens when two people start making googly eyes at each other.

Sometimes you get one story, sometimes two, sometimes three, and occasionally they go absolutely wild and serve up four vignettes in a single sitting. Four! That is basically the speed-dating of television. Blink and you might miss an entire relationship arc. Cough and someone has already gone from first date to dramatic breakup to reconciliation with a new partner. Each little segment is its own self-contained universe of romance, packed with guest stars who pop in, deliver their best flirtation, and then vanish like that really attractive person you made eye contact with at a traffic light who was gone before you could even wave.

And the beauty of it is, because every episode is different, you never know what you are going to get. It is like a box of chocolates, except every chocolate is a tiny love story and some of them are sweet and some of them are unexpectedly spicy and a few of them make you laugh so hard that milk comes out of your nose. This show covered every flavor of romance imaginable, from the silly to the swoon-worthy to the downright absurd. It was variety television at its finest, a celebration of the fact that love is not one story. It is a million little ones, all happening at once, all ridiculous in their own special way, and all worth watching.
